Delivering Growth & Continued Prosperity

This section addresses the Green Belt and where to build.

The first question asks you to put the 5 recognised purposes of the Green Belt into an order of importance.

There is no correct order as each of the 5 purposes has an equal place within the definition of the Green Belt but we suggest the following order;
  1. Checking unrestricted sprawl of large built up areas.
  2. Encouraging the recycling of derelict and other urban land.
  3. Preserving the setting and special character of historic towns
  4. Assisting in safeguarding the countryside from encroachment.
  5. Preventing neighbouring towns from merging into one another

The next question asks you to rank land for future development in order of importance. We suggest;
  1. Brownfield
  2. Under-utilised or surplus greenfield sites in urban areas
  3. Green Belt (other use)
  4. Green Belt (agricultural land)

To explain this order, consider stating that national planning policy dictates that brownfield land should be prioritised for development over all other land and that the Green Belt should be land used as a last resort and only with clear and indisputable justification. Furthermore, Green Belt is Green Belt and should not be split into 'other' and 'agricultural' land, however, our view is that active and productive agricultural land should never be allocated for development. We need to protect our food security.

With regard to the next question about other options for allocating land we cannot suggest anything more than the options already proposed but please add anything you feel strongly about that we may have overlooked.
