Light the blue touch paper and stand back!

1/11/2014

In Touch
To those residents of Burstead and South Green who have received a flyer (“In Touch”)  from Cllr Andrew Baggott, the Billericay Action Group would like to apologise (on his behalf) for the inaccuracies it contains. Are they really in touch or demonstrating they are out of touch with residents views.

Contrary to Cllr Baggott’s incorrect claim the Billericay Action Group have never “tried to fool everyone into believing that they can stop all Green Belt development”.

Contrary to Cllr Baggott’s mistaken accusation the Billericay Action Group are not a party political group. We are an issue based action group, set up and supported by local residents;  by people like you. But then you know this already.

Sadly Cllr Baggott’s misleading and inaccurate comments (and he isn’t the first of his colleagues to say this) serve only to reinforce the opinions of many people - voters - have of politicians. “If you repeat a lie often enough, people will believe it” is a much abused politician’s tactic.

We respectfully suggest Cllr Baggott spends more time working with his colleagues, his constituents and BAG to produce a sensible and sustainable housing proposal that gains the support of local residents - and less time making sensationalist statements that are, in the words of his own leader on Basildon Council, "simply scaremongering".

We all know we need a plan, but it must the the right plan. We now know the plan proposes an unnecessarily high number. What we need is one which balances sensible growth with preserving the green belt and the character of our towns and villages.

"If the politicians will stop telling lies about BAG, we will stop telling the truth about them."
(With apologies to Adlai Stevenson)
Please write to your local Councillor and let them know how you feel. Full details of who to contact can be found at bit.ly/BBC_OAN or in the Issue 4 of “MailBAG:” which can be found at bit.ly/1wSrb1T

    Aims of BAG

To protect the Green Belt around Billericay and elsewhere in Basildon Borough from loss through excessive and unjustified development.

To prevent the character of our historic towns from being changed forever.

To ensure that any development that does take place is sustainable, with adequate infrastructure and prioritises local needs.

We support the need for a new Basildon Local Plan and the need for more housing. But it must be of the right number, the right type and in the right places to best help local people obtain a home of their own.
