London Road Under Attack! South West Billericay Under Attack!

6/2/2024

Developers are targeting the London Road and Mountnessing Road area of Billericay. And most recently another site in the south west has come into the frame between Laindon Road & Frithwood Lane.

We need your help by submitting objections to the planning applications at the appropriate time. They are all on Green Belt land.

You can find a guide here Planning Application Help.

The map below shows the scale of what’s being proposed through the four planning applications that exist today, with another that is imminent.

We will look at the applications one by one below.

Scott Properties are proposing a development of 130 houses with access from London Road, and a Lidl food store with a separate access point on the same road.

It is no longer possible to submit comments or objections to this application. The consultation period is now closed.

(A) London Road north/Mountnessing Road (ref 19/01725/OUT)

Redrow originally submitted an application for up to 540 houses in 2019 but it did not progress. They have recently (December 2023) submitted new details for a development of up to 480 houses, in effect replacing their earlier plans. This site will have primary access from London Road with a second access point on Mountnessing Road roughly opposite Bellvue Road.

The deadline for public comments is now closed.

(D) London Road south/Shepperds Tye (ref 21/00580/FULL)

The planning application can be found here

McCarthy & Stone submitted an application in 2021 for a mixed development of a 91 bed retirement home, sheltered accommodation and extra care facility. That planning application was not progressed.

However, we believe that it will probably be reactivated, or new plans submitted. At this stage we need to look out for any new activity. It is not possible to submit objections at this point.

(E) Heath Close, Tye Common Road (ref 23/01519/FULL)

The planning application can be found here;

Whilst strictly not on London Road the site is in the very close proximity as part of the wider allocation (H17b) from the withdrawn Local Plan.
The proposal is for 32 houses and a 30 place sheltered accommodation unit. This will be on land north of Billericay Town Football Club and south east of Billericay Lawn Tennis Club. It will be accessed from Heath Close, off of Tye Common Road.

The deadline for public comments is 18 March 2024.

(F) Laindon Road/Frithwood Lane

There is no planing application yet.

Gleeson Land have launched a public consultation for a proposed development of 250 houses between Laindon Road & Frithwood Lane running to the south of Scrub Rise. There will be a single estate access road from Laindon Road.

The informal applicant consultation period has now closed.

What to say

At a minimum, just say that the location is Green Belt as defined under Council policies and as such it should not be developed.

If you have specific concerns about a site then please try to be accurate based on any local knowledge you may have.

Consider the impact on infrastructure - roads, schools, health facilities etc.

Do you have environmental concerns, whether flora or fauna?

Please do not be overly emotional. Saying ‘build somewhere else’ won’t be taken seriously! Try to be factual with any examples you have to back up your comments and objections. Leave out any politics, whether national or local.

    Aims of BAG

To protect the Green Belt around Billericay and elsewhere in Basildon Borough from loss through excessive and unjustified development.

To prevent the character of our historic towns from being changed forever.

To ensure that any development that does take place is sustainable, with adequate infrastructure and prioritises local needs.

We support the need for a new Basildon Local Plan and the need for more housing. But it must be of the right number, the right type and in the right places to best help local people obtain a home of their own.
